Shoes of August 2004

Kate Spade

Kate seems to be experimenting with some odd designs. This is one of the less odd ones, which should tell you something. I found these at Nordstrom Rack but didn't buy them. I almost would have but they're a bit too silly for my liking. I do appreciate them as art, however. Cute little strappy sandals with a clever front buckle. An oddly thick bright pink heel. And of course those strange hot pink fluffy bow-like things on top. I like the color combo, but the fluffy things are what made me keep my distance. If I wore these, in a world where I have enough money so I buy absolutely anything that vaguely appeals to me, I would wear them with a spanish-style ruffly skirt and a bright pink top.

NYLA

I'm drooling as I look at these boots. There's something so fantastically sexy about them. They're called "corset" boots, so that might help explain it. These boots have curves. I love the ties down the front and back. The rosy pink stripes help define the shape. And the height of the heel and the shaft are perfect. I'd wear these with stockings and a black knee-length lacy skirt, a loose blouse. And once in a while, probably on Halloween, I'd wear them with a black corset...

This is an interesting shoe. A strange arrangement of lucite and black that somehow sort of works, at least in theory. I love the rounded sole that comes to a point at the toe. They've got a very feminine, sleek heel. But of course the detail that makes these interesting is the odd transition from black leather to lucite and back to black leather on the rest of the shoe. I'm glad the slingback strap is leather as the lucite would be uncomfortable. And while I normally don't care for bows, these would look weird(er) without one. They look almost vintage but the lucite pulls them into modern day. I have to say I haven't decided whether I would wear these. I think if I did I might wear a black vintage dress with some Czechoslovakian glass jewelry.

Kenneth Cole

Kenneth, I want to marry you. Imagine the shoe closets... Very nice black strappy sandals. I like the twist to the strap that goes around the ankle. I really like the strap up the back. And the heel is a good height. I'd wear these with the classic little black dress and some rhinestones.

On first glance I didn't like these. But now I think they're precious. They're so adorable with the teeny little kitten heel and flower cut outs and pink color. But two elements keep them from being too cutesy--the great pointed toe that shouldn't hurt too much with the low heel. And the fact that they're not just pink, they're metallic pink. Almost 80's, almost princess, but skirting both. I'd wear these with a lacy black skirt and an off-the-shoulder top.

Steve Madden

These were tried on by a young asian woman in the Steve Madden store I visited this weekend. Only a woman who was wearing pants like these could pull off these shoes. I'm not saying they should be worn with these pants just that the sort of woman who wears pants like these is the sort of woman who could pull these off. Not for the average woman, like me. There's something strangely appealing about the white snakeskin which actually looks to me more like those distressed white-washed bureaus you see in overpriced antique shops, paint cracking. And the little sequined, beaded flower detail is kind of cute. The silver spike heels are too much. Steve actually calls these his "Bling shoe." The name alone should keep you away. But they're still strangely appealing. But again, not for a woman like me. I wouldn't wear them but maybe she would wear them with a shiny black short skirt and white silk top. Some "bling" on every body part.

I still can't believe I didn't buy these, but they were so uncomfortable; I put my own foot down. They were on sale, just about $15, and so so cute. But as my friend Angie put it, if you don't wear them, they're not a good deal. I love the dots, I love the scalloping, and I love the shape of the heel. And I especially love that the scalloping is pink, a metallic pink. I would have worn them with a flirty black skirt and white or pink top, but only for about 5 minutes...

Too cute. Perfect pale pink. Fabulous sabrina heel. And that crazy black lace. I can't imagine these would stay in good shape for many wearings but think of them like marabou mules. You know those feathers aren't going to stay clean and fluffy for long, but for those 2 or three wearings...ooh la la. I'd wear these with a black skirt hemmed with lace and a fuzzy pink short-sleeved sweater.

My sister's new lovely brown sandals. She got them for $15. She says she's a bit daunted by the fairly high heels. But how could she pass up that shiny antique furniture brown and those criss cross straps? I'm not sure what she'll wear them with, but I recommend an above the knee linen skirt and a chocolate brown tank top.
