Shoes of April 2004

Franco Sarto

While exploring on Amazon I kept coming back to these. I'm not sure why, as I'm not sure they're that inherently attractive. They're nice enough, good solid tall heel, criss-cross straps. The buckle on top is interesting. But they're a little clunky, the straps are thick and not terribly feminine. I really like them anyway. They have a nice curve to them. Mostly I think it's the color that kept drawing me back, though. Such a great summer grass green. I'd wear them with khaki capris and a bright yellow tshirt.

I went with my dad to the California Mille car show prior to the race, as I do every year. They hold it at the Fairmont hotel, a relic of SF opulence on the top of Nob Hill. It's a strange scene, lots of beautiful vintage cars in immaculate condition, a combination of regular people, like me and Dad in our jeans and t-shirts with digital cameras, and the people who are really part of the scene--women in elaborate summer dresses or suits, big hats, high heels, walking around with champagne and men in various eras of costume, top hats, red and white striped suits, all sorts of dress. I really kind of love it. And for some reason it's always gorgeous for the show--sunny and warm. No difference this year.

These were on a woman who fell somewhere in the middle--young, pretty, long dark hair, tight white pants. The moment I saw them I subtly sprinted toward her to try to get some guerilla pics. I wish the front view had come out a little clearer, but it's harder to hide the camera when she's coming right at you. Anyway, you can still tell they've got a fantastic iridescent pink flower on top of lucite. Impressive, seriously high heels. And you have to love this woman's baby pink toenails. However, as you can see from the side pic, these result in a very unattractive and uncomfortable toe problem--they fall off the front and seem to even touch the pavement. For that problem, I probably wouldn't wear these. However, if I did, I'd choose a baby pink dress with a flowy skirt and a halter top, flower in my hair.

Ok, they're a little crazy, a little flashy, a little Moulin Rouge, but there's something sort of fabulous about them. I look at them and I go back and forth between loving them and thinking that a party favor exploded on top of them. I love the shape of them; the square, thin, tall heel; the pointy toe. I love the deep red and black. The stripes...I'm not so sure about. It's the combination of the stripes and the exploded favor that makes me picture can can girls. I guess if I wore these, I'd have to wear them with a red and black corset and a poofy ruffled skirt, tacky feathers in my hair.

Ralph Lauren

These are what those Franco Sartos from a couple of entries ago aspire to be. Not that they weren't lovely, but these have the whole package. Great colors--both this red and a wonderful melon. Nice white stitching. A cute, short square heel. And of course I love the great strap that wraps around your ankle with a nice big buckle. I'd wear these all summer, with capris, skirts, maybe a white carwash skirt and red cap-sleeved T.

Fabulous! I love stars and for the star-lover, you can't get much better than these. Great heel that just seems to be growing out of the sole. Great shiny silver. But it's all about the star. One big flashy glittery star. I'd wear these with a short skirt and a t-shirt, stars hanging from my ears.

This style is called "Capulet" and you can see why. Like a corset for your feet, they luckily look like they might be more comfortable than one. I love the little kitten heel which keeps the incredibly pointy toe from being too painful. The color of the pink is really nice, kind of a dusky rose. But mostly I love the straps across the top, like the ribbons of a corset, asymmetrical, and the little buttons that hold them in place. I'd wear these with a corset-style gown, in satiny pink, walking a red carpet--of course.

I hate the color on these but I still love the sandal. Not that it's a terrible color, I just imagine how cute it would be in others. Amazon annoyingly doesn't show the colors it comes in, but the names are suggestive. One is poppy which I assume is an orange which I think would be fabulous. I like the little square heel. I like the stitching. And for some reason I love the straight bar down the top. I'd wear these, in poppy, with a wrap-around floral skirt and a tank top.

Not my usual style or interest, but these are pretty damned cute. Glad to see someone having fun with the old flip flops. I love the ribbons, which apparently you can also tie around your ankles. The big flower on top is a great touch. And of course the lovely colors and patterns on the soles. I especially like the butterfly. I wouldn't wear these, due to my previously mentioned dislike of things between my toes, but if one were to wear these, I think a fabulous halter bathing suit and a sarong around the waist would be the fashion choice.

These are sweet. Baby pink suede. Cute little flowers. Nice thin asymetrical straps. I'd wear these with a halter dress, maybe in tan and white, pink straw hat, at an Easter egg hunt.

Barbie's evil twin's shoes. No baby pink for her. She likes the fabulous hot fuschia pink. The clear peek-a-boo lucite, revealing more skin than her conventional sister. And of course, the incredibly high heel, to add a little extra height so she can tower over her demure sis. But in a nod to the sweeter twin, there's a little innocent pink bow on top, to keep anyone from getting the right idea. Bad-girl Barbie would wear these with the shortest of pink mini-skirts, a black studded top, and her long blond hair teased to the teeth.

I just think these are really cute. The shape is a straightforward ballet flat with a kitten heel. The kitten heel makes them a little more interesting, a little dressier. It's the silver that's really interesting. They're kind of matte and the little holes or dots give them a great texture. And I like the little black detail on the front. I'd wear these all the time, with black capris maybe and a black top with a silver buckle. Sort of Audrey Hepburn with a twist.

These are works of art. There's just absolutely not a thing wrong with them. The heel, the toe, the satin material on everything including the heel, the little jewel on top...I'm speechless; it's just so perfect. And the dusky pink color...oooh. I don't think I could walk in these but I'd find men to carry me... I'd wear these with a satin dress, hugging the curves, maybe silver, and someone would have to buy me some diamonds to go with them...
