Shoes of July 2001

Baldini

How disco is this shoe? Can't you just see it out on light-up dance floor out of "Saturday Night Fever"? I love the translucent sole and heel and the 70's colors of the straps. The geometric pattern of the straps is a great extra touch. I would wear these with a wrap around blue and brown dress and feathers in my hair. Now if I can just remember how to do the hustle...

There's almost too much going on with this shoe. Almost. It's definitely a case of a designer pushing the limits of what he can do with a shoe. There are contrasting colors--the turquoise of the straps next to the green and orange of the flower detailing. And there are contrasting styles--the modern look of the geometric side straps against the classic pump front with old-fashioned flowers. But somehow it works. It would be a tricky shoe to pull off in an outfit, however. The safe choice would be a simple little black dress. The daring would be an unashamedly dazzling orange dress and turquoise clutch. I'm inclined to go for the daring.

Ferragamo

Nice mules. Very sleek, classic contrasting black and white, old-fashioned pointed toe. The heel is great, tall enough to give shape to the legs but low enough not to hurt. The coolest touch is the tiny little holes on the top, to add extra interest. I wouldn't wear them with white slacks as the pic suggests. I would go for some little black capris and a white halter top, worn to the kind of picnic you see in the movies, with candlelight and champagne. Or try a white dress and black straw hat and wear them to a vintage car race. These shoes demand a special occasion.

Check these out! These are very strange, very cool, very sleek, very stylish, and very modern sandals. The red and black is a natural match and lends a very modern even futuristic feel to the shoes (a co-worker compares me to Star Trek everytime I wear red and black together). The unusual black straps going every which way with their checkerboard pattern are a fabulously fun twist on the clasic strappy sandal. I would wear these with a little black sleeveless dress with a high neck and a red bag. I would wear my hair back like a Robert Palmer girl with bright red lipstick. Check out the site I got these off of: Neiman Marcus. Very cool virtual showroom.

Tommy Hilfiger

Happy 4th! Probably the only time you will see a Tommy Hilfiger shoe in this space but he is patriotic in his color choices... It's actually a pretty cute clog, looks comfortable and has a certain amount of style in the red and white band around the top. They would be great with jeans and a tank top to watch the fireworks.
