Filmed by a neighbor and friend over the years, this documentary gives you an interesting view into the life of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. For those who've been under a rock for the last 35 years or so, Hunter is THE "gonzo" journalist, the man who has done every drug that seems appealing, written for Rolling Stone, written books like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Generation of Swine, has run for Sherriff of Aspen (and lost despite his plan to make pot legal), was inspiration for the character of Duke in Doonesbury, and is idol to Hollywood crazy people like Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro. That's the tip of the iceberg. He also walks around with a whisky in his hand at all times, on the street, at meetings, checking into hotels, etc. He owns guns (really not a good thing). He lives on a "compound" in Colorado. And he's really quite nuts. But brilliant.
This is a very intimate sort of documentary. You see Hunter at home, Hunter nearly making filmmakers cry, Hunter in hotel rooms contemplating film of him nearly making filmmakers cry, Hunter shooting things with his scarily powerful guns, Hunter convincing Johnny Depp to buy scarily powerful guns, Hunter talking to his illustrator while sampling vintage scotches, etc. Hunter is funny, crazy, cool, drunk, odd, and inspiring. Good film.Posted by Alyssa at March 04, 2004 09:32 PM
